My uncle J. was an artillerist in Korea, and has many rousing tales of long distance smiting. They often start with "You see that $INTERESTING_THING? Well, if I still had my 105, I could $PERFORM_ACTS_OF_SMITING, just like $LOCATION_IN_KOREA, where me and my buddies $LONG_WAR_STORY. ;)
A friend of my uncle was a redleg in VietNam. His stories went to smiting with beehive rounds and barels depressed to their lowest. Think 105mm shotgun. Having a need to use a cannon in CQB did not give him happy memories of his time in the jungle.
