If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberalsif we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is.
Now, I can’t say that I will agree with all the things that the present group who call themselves Libertarians in the sense of a party say, because I think that like in any political movement there are shades, and there are libertarians who are almost over at the point of wanting no government at all or anarchy. I believe there are legitimate government functions. There is a legitimate need in an orderly society for some government to maintain freedom or we will have tyranny by individuals. The strongest man on the block will run the neighborhood. We have government to insure that we don’t each one of us have to carry a club to defend ourselves. But again, I stand on my statement that I think that libertarianism and conservatism are traveling the same path. -Ronald Reagan.
I find that many liberals see no difference whatsoever between Conservatives and Libertarians. We are all evil in their eyes.

I like to think that us small ells are changing the definition of "conservative".
Kevin -- More conservative, maybe; but "better"? Not many.
Phelps -- "Conservative" is what it been for a while. The "small ells" are redefining "Republican". ;-)

Funny how us small "l" libertarians are always getting labeled as Conservatives
Oh, dear god Britt, you might as well have just said "Candlejack".
Small ells are as conservative as conservative gets, so there's no such thing as being "more conservative". So say I.

Wait what? Candlejack? What would I happen if I-

Roger that. Happens to me all the time.
Perhaps Conservatism is like quantum physics; it is defined by the observer.
Ok, THAT'S gonna get me bitch-slapped around this place.
Well, it was either equating quantum physics (mechanics) or pornography with conservatism. Thus, Quantum Physics = Pornography.

Kevin, here is something you might want to expand on. Sign of the times maybe?
Damn Randy Barnett - sets that up with the Python reference and then closes comments. Urgh!
Yeah, Unix-Jedi emailed me that. So the Joyce Foundation shelled out $575k to buy a tame history professor. Bad investment, and they let him go.
These days anyone even slightly to the right of Marx is called conservative.
Which is why Markadelphia keeps insisting hat there are no Liberals in this country.
