I consider Larry Niven and Terry Pratchett to be his only serious competition. Among the still living, at least.

Ok, I'll have to read it. It was one of the books I ordered this past weekend.
Fair warning: This is NOT one of his better efforts, and if you have not read a LOT of his earlier works, it can be (very) off-putting.
Yeah, I wasn't impressed. I didn't consider it anywhere near his usual standard.
