You know, Trevanian wrote back in the late 1970s (in Shibumi) about the pop-culture deification of fun. He was talking mostly about American and Americans, about which and whom he seems to have a low opinion, but then he apparently has a low opinion of practically everyone except the Japanese and the Basque.
I read both linked articles, and they're both excellent.
