What I want to know is, where do they come up with the $5K figure?
I mean, I know where they got it - PFA - but I'd like to see the math.
Given that: A semi-auto AR-15 runs roughly around a grand;
and
A transferrable M-16 runs roughly $10K;
Where does $5K come from?
It's about half of the legal transferrable full-auto gun. It's five times the semi-auto gun.
Let's be honest here - the only people who would buy this would be hard-core felons. No one in their right mind would buy a black market machine gun - the stakes are FAR too high.
Hmmm... I'm thinking the "super dangerous weapons" he's REALLY afraid of are 1)The brains to tell when you're getting screwed, and 2) the strength of will to do something about it.

They apparently recovered them, thanks to the guy who picked them up off the highway:

"Hill gets its M-16s back, along with a letter of apology"

Damn. I so wanted Helmke to have kittens!
The guy that picked them up, picked them up from an intersection ON BASE, kept them 24 hours, then secretly returned them once reality set in.
He's going to get caught and should be going to jail shortly.
M-4A1s cost Uncle Sam roughly $1300 each.

Surely the guy that lost them "Transferred a machine gun (or twelve)".
After Olofson, and using the self-same logic of BATFE in that case, why isn't there a new prosecution?
Yeah, Steve, that thought occurred to me as well.

So why $5K?
Why not $50K?
Or a hundred kabillion zillion dollars?
My guess is that they have actual data on what black-market machineguns sell for.
