Damn, I was just getting that quote to post. Oh well, I'll post it anyway.
[Harry Callahan has to explain why he shot a man]
Harry Callahan: Well, when an adult male is chasing a female with intent to commit rape, I shoot the bastard. That's my policy.
The Mayor: Intent? How did you establish that?
Harry Callahan: When a man is chasing a woman through an alley with a butcher's knife and a hard-on, I figure he isn't out collecting for the Red Cross![walks out of the room]
A few days ago in Italy a female police officer shot herself in the head using her own service handgun (the usual Beretta 92) - and it's not the first such case.
There's nothing to gloat about, but it seems that alle the selection and training police officers are supposed to go through aren't 100% effective after all. Who'd have guessed?
Nearly every single gunnie I've ever actually *asked* has told me they were trained in *firearms responsibility and judgement* as kids, with more consistent results than the cops seem to achieve.
That's not to diss cops, either. That's only to say that having the lesson of "don't ever point a weapon, loaded or not, at anything you don't fully intend to kill with that weapon" be as automatic and unconscious as potty training has its advantages, and police acadamies nor anyone else can be expected to turn back time.
In case anyone is interested, Shiv Works has a SERIOUSLY EXCELLENT course on pre-assult cues and criminal encounters. It gets wicked into role playing and force-on-force.
Very good stuff.
Gabe Suarez, while he is contraversial, also has a fantastic force-on-force (airsoft) course tailored to the civilian (no backup, "bad breath" distance, etc...)
"And it's been my experience that private citizens interested in firearms "train" a lot more than most police officers do..."
I have noticed the same thing.

As Brother Callahan said:
When a naked man is chasing a woman through an alley with a butcher's knife and a hard-on, I figure he isn't out collecting for the Red Cross!

So, to prevent suicides we need to abolish the police? [/liberal gun ban logic]
