I've lived in two shall-issue states and personally just never felt the need or desire to carry.
EXCEPT when I visited DC - which I used to do regularly when I lived in Northern Virginia. I would literally inspect my vehicle to make sure there were 4 tires and no broken glass every time I returned to where it was parked. Even in Georgetown.
One of my co-workers (and fellow gym rat) was born and raised in Harlem - and he refused to go into SE DC in the 90s. He'd say you'd have to be crazy to go there.
I suppose I should've gotten my permit just to make a liberal wet himself.
Note: I live in the People's Socialist Democracy of Great Britain. Please refrain from showing any identifying information. No, I'm not joking.
I really like the way you tackle these issues - it appeals to the (software) engineer in me. More than that, your posts are incredibly effective in getting lefties to think about guns and crime. Most profess themselves open to alternate viewpoints, so on several occasions I have pointed people at your posts – not as facts per se, but as a place to start because you always attribute your sources. One friend will now simply no longer talk about guns in any context; I’m sure that given a little more time he’ll accept that “more guns please” is the only logical step to take.
I have a few things I’d like to discuss privately – do you have a PGP key? I’m sorry to have to do this in public but I just can’t risk it any other way…
Dellinger lied before the Supreme Court about the functional firearm ban too.
These guys want us to believe that they want only reasonable gun controls in the future - when they lie about the unreasonable and draconian gun controls that they've already passed.
Do you have a link to Fenty's post- argument briefing to reporters. I can't find the full text or video anywhere.
When it was playing live, I was only half listening but I am convinced that he said something to the effect of "the murder rate in DC has gone down every year that the gun ban has been in effect"
perhaps I "misheard" this, the biggest of all lies, but I can't track it down for verification.
"Make no mistake about it, this is a public safety case," Fenty said. "The reason the city council enacted the gun ban in the 1970s because crime was getting out of control and guns were the cause of a disproportionate number of fatalities. When the gun ban became law, violent crime dropped significantly in the city and has steadily gone down since then."
I guess I even missed it in your lead paragraph.......
So when does Gura get to point out that Dellinger, uh, *misrepresented* the law about long gun storage? Or is that sort of thing simply *not done* in oral argument before SCOTUS? (I can see how it might be impolitic to point out that *Justice Souter* misrepresented the law....)
DC has been a pimple on the ass of this nation as long as I have been alive and the parade of incompetents and ciphers that constitute its' elected officials attests to this.
The one guy I knew who grew up there said, "The only people who move TO DC are government employees, gov't contract employees and elected officials. Anyone born poor or working class in DC who 'makes it' GETS OUT. True, white people flee to Virginia and black people go to Maryland, but they all get out."
I agree that the current structure of DC's government is unjust, but the solution isn't statehood (Can you say "Senator Jackson", "Senator Sharpton" and "Congressman Farrakhan"?) but returning the District (except for the Federal buildings) to the states from which it was carved. (VA and MD probably don't want those parts back, though...)
That was a shot at another commenter who believes that the Left doesn't manipulate language, only the Right does. Or at least only the Right does it purposefully and effectively.
"returning the District (except for the Federal buildings) to the states from which it was carved. (VA and MD probably don't want those parts back, though...)"
I believe VA reclaimed the land it donating when it declared its Independence in the War of Southern Independence.
But I'm very interested in seeing how the Justices rule on this. Hopefully they will declared an individual right, and strike down the ban. But what is up in the air is how much "reasonable" regulation is allowed. That is the key. We'll see. Anybody know how long it will take to release the opinion.

Before that. The southern part was retroceded to Virginia in 1847.
Of course the real reason Maryland doesn't want DC back is because that many people would instantly become the center of political power in the state, eclipsing Baltimore.
If Cathy Lanier were dropped on N.Y. Ave., S.E. D.C. at 11:00 AM., WITH a sidearm, she would be robbed, raped, beaten, and dead by noon. AND SHE KNOWS IT.
I think we will at least get an individual rights ruling. I fervently hope so. What the other side desperately needs to realize is that they are not going to succeed at getting rid of firearms. There are far too many of us who will not allow them to be taken. Please do not attempt it. We don't want to go there.
No, I'm not wearing tinfoil hiding under the bed for fear of the confiscation squads. I mean the incremental wearing away of the right with their ultimate goal of total elimination. Not. Going. To. Happen. We've allowed about as much as we're going to.
Aww, but Kev! Don'tcha see he's just trying to bring forth some good? Don'tcha think we oughta give them a pass on all these things, in deference for the good they're trying to bring about?
I heard Dellenger say on NPR that 85% of robberies and 100% of the rapes in DC were accomplished with firearms and that's why handguns needed to be banned. That he could say that with a straight face and with no regard for those victim's right to protect themselves just about caused me to strangle my truck radio.
One of the biggest problems is that liberal media attracts liberal reporters and all of these people think alike in the office when they are writing their story. The problem is that none of the liberal reporters ever know the facts and buy into what these people are saying, who is asking the questions, or why aren't they. Just imagine if someone at the press conference and asked the questions Kevin did, or knew the statistics to question what was said, Now that would be a reporter!! Why do you have to pass on the statements instead of challenge the statistics and do some investigative reporting of your own (retorical question I know, based on my first statement). But man, what a way to make a name for yourself.
You know, the only time I have ever seen someone shot was in DC in 1994 near George Washington University, 21st and Eye Street if I am not mistaken. Shortly thereafter was when I purchased my first handgun.
Comments by Fenty can go by the wayside, this has been the argument of opposition from every state that has enacted a right to carry law. I just hope SCOTUS rules the way that a majority of Americans see it.

A superlative post, Kevin. As always!

WOW!
Fantastic post.
Thank you.
Sorry, no, I don't have a PGP key. Any other suggestions?
Kevin,
Did you really mean: "example of right-wing language manipulation"?
I often mis-read stuff, but that feels like it ought to be "left-wing"
HTH, HAND,

oh, here it is,

The ruling is due some time in June.
