Remember that scene in 'Gettysburg' where Lee says that he loves the army; but to be a good general, you have to be willing to destroy that which you love?
And I remember a line of David Drake's that a commander who is not willing to expend his troops like rounds of ammunition, when necessary, will win no battles, and then all die.
I'm afraid that this is one of those things in which there is NO 'good' choice, and far too many are not willing to make the best choice available because of it.
