Well, General Purpose is probably the best term, but that is too hard to say conveniently....so then it must become the G.P....and since we're already there...why not the Jeep Rifle?

How about: "Rifle."

"but every time I hear the word "Homeland" (as in "Dept. of Homeland Security") I expect to see people in black leather trench coats and knee-boots clicking their heels and giving stiff-arm salutes."

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Where in the hell did this homeland crap come from anyway?

All my life the term used was domestic to refer to the United States and then, after Sep. 11, it's homeland this and homeland that.

Homeland is a direct translation of the German word Heimat. The home of the German Volk. Is this really a term we want to use in this country?

How about 'Boomstick'?

Personally, I like "Evil Black Rifle".

I' with Jeff on this one.

Evil Black Rifle/ EBR

Let the panty waist GFWs worry about how scary a name is.

I don't much care for the AR-15 pattern rifle but I'm considering buying one BECAUSE GFWs find them scary.

I've collected all kinds of older style rifles and pistols for years. Never had any interest in the "newer" stuff until awhile back I purchased a "poodle shooter". Hey, they are cool, and highly configurable! Who woulda thunk?

Utility Rifle, EBR, Boomstick... No matter what we call them, the GFW community will manage to twist it into something to suit their mission.

"Utility Rifle, EBR, Boomstick... No matter what we call them, the GFW community will manage to twist it into something to suit their mission."

Bingo. We could call them "Cute & Fuzzy Bunny Rifles" and before you know it the Bradys'll have all sorts of headlines about those eeevil C&FBRs and how no one NEEEEEDS a cute & fuzzy bunny rifle...

"Rabid Wolverine Dispatcher"...? I'm not too keen on the Der Heimatland and associated "lebensraum" nomenclature either - but it's a semiauto rifle or a carbine as far as I can tell.
"Varmint gun" would work except among the x-treme SPCA'ers and other rabid Animal-Rightists.
We could go all youth-movement sportz and call it the "X-treme Utility Boomstick?"

Granted, large segments of the public just aren't ready for the bald statement that "there's nothing wrong with civilian posession of machine guns", and so it's best not to do the macho flash thing, but at the same time, we should make no apologies for the military pedigree or utility of our arms. If we do, we risk the appearance of conceding, and morphing 2A into a sporting purposes guarantee, rather than the guarantee of a militarily credible civil population.

Leon:

Thanks for the kind words, but you're sorta the Jehovah's Witness knocking at the wrong door, since I'm an atheist (note the small "a.")

"Varmint Gun" would still apply to the political application... All my guns are old military-pedigree guns, except for the 1913 Olympic target pistol and the A-5 shotgun...
