Unfortunately the .forward file is handled deep within the bowels of
Sendmail and if present gets invoked before the LDA (e.g. procmail).
Fortunately, you can use procmail instead of the .forward file. At the
end of the user's private .procmailrc file in their home directory,
you could put:
:0
| /usr/bin/vacation $LOGNAME
Then you get the benefit of all the filtering (sanitizer,
spamassassin, etc.) plus the vacation reply.
PLEASE TEST THIS FIRST. I haven't actually done this myself, as I
don't use vacation.
